20,000 seat arena one step closer for Markham

MARKHAM - Concerts, sports, and all things entertaining are one step closer in Markham with Town Council's late Thursday night approval of the financial framework, and a proposal from a Private Sector Group, to partner up on a world class sports, entertainment & cultural centre. The 665,00 sq. ft., 20,0000 seat arena is to be located on an approximate six acre parcel of Markham-owned land, west of the Unionville GO station, and on the north side of 407.

MARKHAM - A long-term agreement between the Town of Markham and FLATO Developments Inc. has given FLATO the naming-rights sponsor for Markham Theatre for Performing Arts.

Loblaws buys most of Zellers prescription files

YORK REGION - With the impending transition of most Zellers stores to Target, Loblaws announced that it has purchased the prescrition files of 95 Zellers pharmacies across Canada, with the exception of the provinces of Quebec and British Columbia. The aggregate purchase price for the files will be approximately $35 million.

Japanese recovery after earthquake and tsunami commemorated in photo exhibit

MARKHAM - It caused devastation along the coast of Japan's Tohoku region, destroying cities, wiping out villages, and killing more than 10,000 people. The Great East Japan Earthquake, the tsunami that followed it, and the massive recovery efforts are the subject of an international photo exhibit that documents tragedy and hope in the year after the March 11, 2011 natural disaster.

Markham receives funding for new community centre

MARKHAM - The Canadian government has given Markham $13.7 million through the Green Municipal Fund, which is part of a $550 million endowment to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM), and is designed to help municipalities achieve economic and environmental sustainability through green initiatives.
