York Regional Police stopped 327 drivers during a two-week enhanced enforcement initiative, targeting motorists who use their cell phones and other handheld devices while driving during Operation Stay Focused.
The enhanced enforcement began on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, the two-year anniversary of legislation prohibiting the use of all handheld communication devices while operating a motor vehicle. York Regional Police has assigned officers in both fully marked and unmarked police vehicles to enforce the legislation.
“Drivers who refuse to put down their hand-held devices and focus solely on their driving are endangering lives,” said Sergeant Sarah Riddell, of the York Regional Police Traffic Bureau. “Focus your attention on where it’s needed most and let the calls go to voicemail. Not doing so could result in a substantial fine, or worse yet, a collision.”
Motorists observed Driving with a Display Screen Visible to the Driver or Operating a Handheld Communication Device or Entertainment Device While Driving will be charged. The set fine for these offences is $125.
The consequences of losing your focus on the road can be serious, even fatal. Studies show that a driver using a cell phone is four times more likely to be involved in a collision than a driver who is completely focused on driving.
